Brian Stone has been an active opera conductor since graduate school at the Peabody Conservatory studying with Gustav Meier, John Shirley-Quirk, Frederik Prausnitz and Wayne Conner. Following this he was an assistant at Baltimore Lyric Opera. Other figures from the opera world he has worked with include Bethany Beardsley, Walter Ducloux, Eric Owens, Sydney Mancasola, and Roger Brunyate.

Dr. Stone has led productions of all three Mozart-Da Ponte operas and The Magic Flute, as well as The Barber of Seville, Albert Herring, Die Fledermaus, Street Scene, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Virgil Thomson and Gertrude Stein’s Four Saints in Three Acts, John Harbison’s Full Moon March and Conrad Susa’s Transformations and others.

An award-winning teacher, he has been on the faculties of Scripps College, The University of Delaware, Ohio University, College of the Canyons, and a guest at San Diego State University, The University of Mobile, The Catholic University, The Boston Conservatory, and the National University of Colombia in Bogota. 

Stone has been the recipient of a fellowship to the Salzburg Festival from the American-Austrian Foundation and won prizes from The Black Sea Conducting Competition in Romania, Downbeat Magazine, The Jessie DuPont Music Education Foundation, The Kiwanis Club, and the First Honours Diploma in the 29th International Masterplayers Music Competition. He has also been an adjudicator for the National Association of Teachers of Singing, the University of Maryland Concerto Contest, the Austrian/American Mozarteum Scholarship Competition and orchestra festivals in four states. He is a graduate of Bennington College and holds Masters and Doctoral degrees from the Peabody Conservatory of Music.
