Mission Opera Education
When Mission Opera Executive & Artistic Director, Dr. Joshua R. Wentz, began his work at Mission College in Sylmar, CA, he found that many students taking music courses lacked foundational knowledge that so many other, more privileged students get. Many had never been in a choir or had never had music classes in school before. That's why Wentz founded Mission Opera with a major focus on bringing opera and musical theater arts to local schools and to the Santa Clarita community at large.
In addition to producing our mainstage season, we engage with our community through education and outreach bringing our unique program, BOXTOP OPERA™, to schools in underserved communities where music programs are marginalized and student access to opera is limited.
BOXTOP OPERA™ is a 45-50 minute show with three singers, a pianist and a box of costumes and props that helps children learn about opera in a fun and engaging way. We also host a special, online educational series for instrumentalist students (band and orchestra), as well as vocal students (choir and theater).

What programming will work best for my students?
We are happy to talk through options with you. Programs are available for all ages and grade levels.
How long is it?
45-50 minutes, which fits within a typical class period. Some are presented in a series, with multiple sessions over several days.
What does it cost?
Each session is $1400 and may be subsidized by a limited amount of grant funding that we have available, especially for underserved schools and communities. We are always willing to work with you on pricing.
How can I connect your programming with our curriculum?
Our education staff and teaching artists will collaborate with you to integrate content into the lessons. Our programs have been specifically designed to align with content standards.
